Residential and Commercial Overhead Sectional Garage Door Sizes

What Size Overhead Sectional Garage Door Should I Buy?

December 2, 2019

The size you need for your new overhead sectional garage door is something you should know in advance prior to seeking pricing for your project. Knowing the dimensions of your opening in terms of width x height is the first step in finding the best fit for your needs. While ArmRLite is known for fabricating custom sizes as needed for specific applications, there are typical industry sizes that we can accommodate as well.

Typical Residential and Commercial Overhead Sectional Garage Door Sizes

Typical industry overhead sectional garage door sizesResidential overhead sectional garage door sizes typically fall into one of two categories: Single car garage doors and two-car garage doors. Single car garage doors are often 8 x 7, 9 x 8 or 8 x 9 and are always stated as width x height. There are some variations of these sizes in different areas of the United States and on new home construction projects, but these three sizes are what you would most often see on a residential application for a single car garage.

Two or double car garage doors are larger with average sizes of 16 x 7 or 16 x 8 measured in width x height. Again, these sizes may vary depending on new construction or location. Two car garage doors must be wide enough for two standard size vehicles to drive through without obstruction.

Commercial overhead sectional garage door sizes vary greatly. However, there are some sizes that are typical for specific applications. Fire stations, for example, are often 14 x 14 to be large enough for emergency vehicles to pass easily. Service stations or gas stations with service bays are often 10 x 10, 10 x 12, 12 x 10, or 12 x 12 measured in width x height respectively. Because these applications most often cater to smaller vehicles like cars, pickup trucks, and minivans the overhead sectional garage doors do not need to be excessively large. On service stations that work on commercial vehicles like trucks, buses, and other large transportation vehicles, the sizes of the doors may need to be larger to accommodate.

Typical industry sizes for residential and commercial applications do not mean that these sizes are “standard”. There are always variations. Be sure to measure your opening before starting your search for a new garage door. If your project is new construction, be sure to discuss with your contractor and architect what size overhead sectional garage door you will need on your building to accommodate its intended use.
